Need a brain break & maybe a good laugh? Watch this video. (It's a little corny, but when the guy belts out his chorus, it makes me laugh!) Even better, it makes the rules for subordinating conjunctions easy to understand. |
Now that you have a good understanding of what coordinating and subordinating conjunctions are all about, you are ready to create your IRWN pages.
1. First, you need to color, cut and glue down the FANBOY Cut-Out Handout you received in class. 2. Add the FANBOYS Rule Handout you received below the cutouts. Pay special attention to the use of the comma. Make extra notes from the video above if you think you could find it helpful later. 4. Now, glue in the Subordinating Conjunctions sheet, also known as your AAAWWUBBIS Poster. Add color by decorating it how you want. Yes, there MUST be color! Pay special attention to HOW AND WHEN the commas are used when an subordinating conjunction is used. Make extra notes if it will help you! 5. Add a note somewhere on your page about the purpose of a conjunction (AKA what it is), and why we want to use them. HINT: You have to read ALL of what I wrote to be able to do that! *Don't forget to add these pages to your table of contents titled CONJUNCTIONS (FANBOYS) & SUBORDINATING CONJUNCTIONS.* |

Why would I use a conjunction? |
You use conjunctions to combine sentences, yes, but the reason we combine sentences is to add variety to our writing. If you only used simple, short sentences in your writing, you could lose your audience's interest. It also doesn't seem personal to a reader because they lose a sense of connection when the writing the read doesn't sound like words people speak in real life. Using sentence variety keeps your reader entertained, interested, and following your meaning/the point you are trying to get across to them.
Read the examples below to see what I mean: Which version do you prefer? I hope it's the second! SIMPLE SENTENCE VERSION: She was a complicated person. She always seemed happy. She smiled a lot. She liked books by Sylvia Plath. She had this inner dark and twisty soul. VS. SENTENCE VARIETY VERSION: Although she had this inner dark and twisty soul, she smiled a lot. She liked books by Sylvia Plath, but she always seemed happy. She was a complicated person. |
