Word PartsSometimes we don't know the whole word, but if we know what part of the word means, then we are better able to infer its meaning. Therefore, we study prefixes, roots, and suffixes throughout the year to help aide us in our vocabulary growth! This is how we reach our goal of learning so many words a year to keep up with our expected growth! (You will find out more about that next week!) This week we will be focusing on PREFIX.

Watch the Flocab VideoA prefix comes at the BEGINNING of a word. It DOES NOT change the spelling of the base word, but it DOES change the meaning of a word!
Watch the video to help explain what a prefix is and to see common ones that you will be responsible for learning! |

Complete the IRWN Portion
Cut, Color and paste the different word parts into your IRWN! Take the notes! Make sure you add it to your Table of Contents. (This will be 50% of your grade. No partial credit will be given.)
Notes: Prefix- One or more sounds or letters placed before the root or base word that changes the meaning of the word. It does not change the spelling! For Example: Re + Organize = Reorganize (meaning to organize it again!) Root- the basic part of a word that carries meaning For example: astro = star, therefore, the word 'astrogate' (meaning to navigate a spacecraft in outer space) is related to the stars! Suffix- One or more sounds or letters placed after the root or base word that may change the meaning of the word, and also may change the spelling! For example: The suffix -ful = full of, therefore, care + ful = careful (meaning full of care). This new word with the addition of the suffix is different than the base word 'care'. It is now used to describe rather than as an action (or verb, rather). Here the spelling doesn't change, but if we added the suffix -ing instead you would have 'caring', and that would change the spelling!

Most Common PrefixesThe image displays a list of the most common prefixes in the English language. You will need to make cards to study these for your quiz next week for the second half of your homework via Quizlet. The url link to the website is: https://quizlet.com/. You will have to sign-up first, but it is a free app/website. You will be able to use it to study for any class after you have discovered it today! If you cannot use Quizlet for some reason, then please make flashcards on index cards or NEATLY cut paper. I strongly suggest you try to use Quizlet, as it gives you options to test yourself when you study by creating quizzes! We will study roots and suffixes later too, and have a BIG test over all of them at some point, so it would be easier for you to keep up with them and practice them if you had them stored in one interactive location!
The point of the note cards is to give you a tool to help you study these over the next two weeks. This portion is the other 50% of your grade, and no partial credit will be given. Homework is due on FRIDAY! You will have a test on these prefixes on November 20, 2015, before we break for Thanksgiving. |
