Please remember to read the information before watching the videos and taking the notes. Don't forget the quiz at the end of the lesson!
WHAT IS THIS NONSENSE YOU SPEAK OF AKA WHAT ARE LITERARY DEVICES? LET'S BREAK IT DOWN! Literary means the study of literature. Story means story. (LOL.) Device means tool. Put them together and what do you get? You guessed it!!! "The definition of literary device is a technique a writer uses to produce a special effect in their writing." - Internet Or maybe you did not guess that? LOL. I have jokes today! Luckily, I also have a Mrs. Sawyer definition for you too: Simply put, a literary device is a tool an author uses when they write a story in order to engage (entertain) the reader.
WHY DO I HAVE TO KNOW THIS STUFF? You have already learned about a lot of them, and as you grow you will learn more. The point of learning about literary devices in ELA is help readers dissect text, so they can "think like an author". Do authors necessarily do all of these things intentionally? No. I hope not. However, your ability to see them, helps you develop a deeper understanding of the story and the characters within it. Your ability to create examples and use literary devices in your own writing helps you develop as a writer. Writing is a tool you will need forever. WHAT DO YOU NEED TO DO?
Before you begin the notes and learning about the new ones, briefly review the ones you have already learned about.
Then, take the notes on the four you will learn and add to your academic vocabulary knowledge this week.
After you have taken the notes, COLOR THEN CUT the IRWN notes and glue them into your journal.
Using the notes, watch the video to review the concepts.
Last, take the quiz using the notes and the information you reviewed to help you answer the questions.
Helpful Hints for Success:
Do it in the order I asked. I did that to help you get it done quickly and be successful. Don't make-up your own instructions by doing it out of order.
Reference the pictures to help you build the page.
Use the notes on your quiz. Look up examples online of the concepts if you don't understand them.
Do NOT rush taking the quiz. It isn't that much. Start the Semester with a good grade.
Ask me if you don't understand a concept. I am not telepathic (that means I can't read your mind), even if I tell you differently in class. Please come to tutorials or see me during your class time (and not while I am in the middle of a lesson, please) to ask me about your assignment. You can also email me.
-Literary Devices Learned Review - You should know ALL of these (minus the bonus words) by now. If not, you should be studying them!
Using the handout, take the notes and create your new IRWN page. Update the Table of Contents!
You can position these how you wish on the page as long at you take up no more than one page and are able to fit all of the information.
Watch the video over NEW literary devices you are adding to your academic vocabulary!
NOTE TO STUDENT: You should take notes BEFORE you watch the video and reference them as you watch to help you understand them accurately. There are some literary devices in the video below that are not one of these four, but have been discussed and are good for you to review.
